Ghosts of Christmas' Past

I love photos, and in my family there are a lot to go around! That's a fact. My mom has been taking pictures of me my whole life. These are few of my favorites from the past 23 Christmases!

Christmas 1992

Christmas 1993

Christmas 2007

Christmas 2008 - senior year of High School

Christmas 2012 ... the year of the infinite Jenga game. We played until there were literally no more moves we could make and then let Ryder knock it down

This one isn't mine... but my mom sent it to me with the Christmas photo's i asked for and I love it! That's my mom, her two little brothers and my nana!

Stocking Stuffers for Everyone on Your List

Let me just be the first to say... I detest stocking stuffers in general. For the most part they consist of candy, and junk that you don't like/need/want/use. It's a great gesture but honestly for the most part they seem to be a waste of money to me.

Additionally while researching for this post I came across so many "Stocking Stuffers for Everyone" lists, and the number one thing that appalled me is the amount it would cost me to stuff a stocking with the items on those lists. One stocking would have cost me over $300.00 in stocking stuffers and I can't afford to spend that much to stuff a stocking.

I generally spend between $50.00 and $75.00 on R's "stocking stuffers" which is actually a bit much. But he doesn't get a lot of wrapped gifts really since things like Xbox Live membership or an Itunes gift card are things he really wants and those a pricey yet very small.

So my mission... since I chose to except it is to create a list of stocking stuffers for women, men, and children that won't break the bank and aren't going to wind up in the garbage bin by Valentines day.

Obviously I would never purchase all of the items on the list to stuff a stocking... that would totally defeat my affordable goal. I try to choose one or two nice items and fill the rest with candy that R likes or little things that I know he'll use like chapstick (since he uses it but loses it!)

All stocking stuffers included in this post are able to be purchased at Target, and are Items that I would be happy to receive. For the men's I consulted with my husband, as well as a few male friends :)

Why I love Christmas now... when I didn't before

Disclaimer... this post isn't necessarily a happy one, but it is an honest one.

I never really enjoyed Christmas when I was young, I enjoyed my family, I enjoyed the gifts, but I never truly enjoyed the Holiday. To me it was always more about the hustle and bustle of going from place to place. The struggle to keep up from year to year of where I would wake up on Christmas morning, and where I would be Christmas night. That was life for me, as I'm fairly certain it is for most children whose parents are divorced. Custody arrangements are a bitch... that's a fact! They take a tole on your ability to enjoy Christmas because you can't have consistency, you can't have tradition and you never get to play with the toys Santa brings you because you barely have time to open them before you have to be carted off to the other parents house.

That was life for a long time... Now it's not. Not that I'm not still shuffling back and forth from parent to parent, alternating years because my little sister is in a similar situation to the one I was in as a child, but it's different now because I have Ridge. He shuffles back and forth with me, he makes the million and one trips to see my parents, his parents, and all the respective grandparents each year without complaining and he keeps me from getting depressed about the fact that I can't spend my Christmas sitting in my living room, in my pajamas, curled up with a cup of coffee, my husband, and our cat. {My Ideal Christmas... isn't that sad I really just long to stay put for a day}

Also ... major plus this year. Instead of being the one taking the family Christmas Photo at my in-laws house I get to be in it! Success I finally made the picture!

Favorite Christmas Movies

My Favorite Christmas Movies...
For me this post is an easy one. I love christmas movies. There isn't anything I love more than curling up with a cup of hot cocoa and a cookie or two to watch a Christmas movie whether I'm by myself or with my guy.

I have so many favorites but here are a few that are the best of all... in my opinion

The Year Without A Santa Claus

Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer

A Charlie Brown Christmas

How the Grinch Stole Christmas

It's a Wonderful Life

Christmas Wishlist ...

So let me start by saying I know there are a LOT of things on this list... and I don't really think I'll get any of them for Christmas. But that doesn't mean a girl can't dream right :)

1. Revlon Perfect Heat Pro Stylist Shine Booster Hair Dryer (Target)... I really need a new hair dryer mine is six years old and practically breathes fire!

2. Women's Boyfriend Cardigan in Light Taupe Brown (Old Navy) ... I love Cardigan's they are as much a staple in my wardrobe as my blue jeans and pencil skirts.

3. T. Swift's new Album 1989 :) (Target) ... It's Taylor Swift and I'm in love i don't think more of an explanation is required.

4. Olay Pro X advanced Cleansing System (Ulta) ... been wanting this for years

5. Kate Spade Sparkle Stud Earrings (Nordstrom) ... these are pricy for a pair of studs but at $28.00 they are far more affordable than most Kate Spade and they are so darling. They come in gold, silver, or multi colored glitter

6. It Brushes for Ulta, Your Beautiful Basics 5 pc Getting Started Brush Set ...  I need a good set of brushes to get me started with makeup. I currently put my foundation on using a combo of my hands and a real techniques sponge... not the most efficient.

7. Merona Satchel Bag with Removable Cross Body Strap (Target) ... I am just in love with this beautiful bright bag.

8. Starbucks Gift Card... no explanation needed

9. Red Tights (these are from Target) ... i really want red tights

10. Blanket Scarf ... these are adorable and I love scarves.

11. Aztec Sweater ... i need this in my closet

12. This Hat... it is beyond the best thing i've ever seen

SO there it goes. The 12 things I would ask for for Christmas is I actually asked for anything for Christmas.

Happy Blogmas Loves!

Deck the Halls... the tree, and the walls!

Christmas is one of my favorite times of the year, most years I can barely wait until the day after Thanksgiving to get out all my decorations and start to make my home feel a little bit more festive. In fact one of my many many goals for the New Year is to be better about making my home feel festive year round... but that's a story for a later post this one is about How it's beginning to look a lot like Christmas at the Casa de Howell!

obviously the first thing I did was put our tree up! I love our Christmas tree and can't wait to add more ornaments to it as the years go on. Ridge and I buy a new ornament to commemorate each year, we started last year with our 2013 ornament. It has our engagement picture in it and this year we found an adorable personalized Newlywed's first Christmas ornament that is just too cute. Below are some of our favorites.

The top left is our first apartment ornament, this one I made (we don't live there anymore so don't think i just gave out our address), the middle is this years ornament, the right is last years, and the bottom is a firetruck Ridge bought at a Hallmark store probably three or four years ago. It's one of his favorites, and mine too. It lights up!

And here's one of our living room in general... complete with Princess Di, asleep under the tree!

Merry Christmas From My Home to Yours!

13 Personal Questions

Today we are doing the Personal questions tag... I was tagged by my friend Cat! She is the blogger behind Cittie Tells.

13 Personal Questions:

1. What do you order at Starbucks?

Either a White Chocolate Mocha when it's cold outside, or a Iced Tea Lemonade with Passion Tea when it's hot. I don't really deviate. Except for when the holiday drinks are available... i really like to try the holiday drinks.
2. One thing in your closet you cannot live without?
I don't know if there is only one item that I couldn't live without. But for sure I would have a hard time without my scarves and boots. Those are the things I'm closest to not being able to live without.
3. What's one thing most people probably don't know about you?
Hmm, I'd say that most people probably don't know that I'm not originally from South Carolina. I was born and lived my first six years in Virginia. My mom and I didn't move to SC until I was six. However my entire family on both sides are from SC. My sister and I are the only two people in our family who weren't born here.

4. Name one thing you want to do before you die?
I want to see as much of the world as possible.
5. What's one food you cannot live without?
Macaroni and Cheese... it's my own personal addiction.
6. What quote/phrase do you live by?
"Be Yourself, every one else is taken" i don't know who said it, but it's always rang true with me and it's what I try to do every single day.
7. What do you like/dislike about the Blogging community?
I like getting to interact with new people I wouldn't otherwise get to interact with.
I don't like the fact that people can be extremely rude to one another.
8. What's your most listened to song on iTunes?
Get up by Korn featuring Skrillex... clearly my husband has been listening to my I Tunes more than I have.
9. What kind of style would you define yourself as having?
I'm not really sure i have a style... i would at best call my self eclectic with a slight leaning towards preppy. A few weeks ago a good friend told me I was Channeling Blair Waldorf and it made my week!
10. Favourite number?
13.... don't ask questions.
11. Two Hobbies?
Blogging and Painting
12. Two Pet Peeves?
When people talk and write in text language... actually text language in general gets on my nerves how the heck am I supposed to know what you're talking about if you don't use abbreviations.
People who mistreat children or animals. That just makes me madder than a hornet in a rain storm.
13. Guilty Pleasures?
My guilty pleasures are watching Christmas Movies with my Cat WAY before Thanksgiving... like all year long. And wearing fuzzy socks. I just love the feeling of them on my feet.

I was tagged in this Personal Questions tag by Cat over at Cittie Tells, who is an amazing blogger and an amazing friend so you should totally go over and check her out! And then Do this tag for yourself! I tag you all! Got forth and do this!
Be sure to tag back and tag your friends to get them to do this too!

Fashion Friday... On a Wednesday... whoops (Exam Looks that aren't Norts)

Exam week is a B**** but that doesn't mean I'm going to dress like I just rolled out of bed. I make a special effort to get up and get dressed during exam week because I already feel crappy enough about life during exams I don't need to feel bad about the way I dress too.

Last year I was majorly guilty of wearing leggings and sweatshirts during exam week. And pretty sure I didn't give a crap. This year I have a hair cut that doesn't allow me to just roll out of bed and go to school without a second thought, and if i'm being honest I hate to fix my hair just to put on sweats or leggings and call it good. So here's my formula for comfy, yet not sloppy exam outfits.

Jeggings... jean leggings look like jeans but feel like heaven. Pair them with a pair of boots, a plain colored top and a cute patterned scarf. Takes almost no time, and looks put together and functional. I know it's not visionary or revolutionary fashion wise but it works.

Favorite Holiday Meals...

Holidays are a great time for food! And like any good southern girl I love all things Thanksgiving and Christmas. In my family, and my husbands' family there are some staples that are at every single Thanksgiving and Christmas Dinner and those foods also happen to be some of my very favorite things to eat!

My hands down favorite part of any Holiday is cornbread dressing... I know that isn't a meal, It's a side. But when you're me, it's a meal because 90% of what I eat each year is dressing. Because I only get it twice a year and I love it so much! SO let me just clarify when i say Cornbread dressing I do not mean this

this is an abomination... it's almost sacrilegious!  Cornbread Dressing is that amazing of all amazing holiday  foods... It looks like this

and is pretty hard to screw up, but there are a million ways you can make it and everyone and their grandmother thinks their's is the best of the best... but everyone is wrong because my grandma's is the best ;)

My second favorite part of a Holiday meal is the dessert... I love dessert. But especially love Fruit Cake Cookies. One of Ridge's aunts makes the most amazing cookies. I can't give out her recipe but there is a similar one here!

There it is then, my favorite holiday foods. Because lets be honest all holiday meals are my favorite!

Dealing with Exam Stress

Y'all I am one stressed out girl this time of year... and not because of Christmas or the Holidays. The reason for most of my stress stems from something that is coming much sooner than Christmas and that thing is FINAL EXAMS.

I don't know how many of you are in College, much less how many are Law Students like me but i'd be willing to bet that most of you are or have experienced something similar to final exam stress. In Law School it's like stress on CRACK and you have to sometimes make yourselves slow down, breathe and relax.

I've got a few (3) rituals that are pretty essential for getting myself through exams.

#1. Hot Chocolate and Christmas Movies after final exams.

Last year after I would finish exams I would be so majorly exhausted and mentally drained that all I would want to do is sleep. So instead of getting started on studying for my next exam I would take two hours of my life, sit down have a huge mug of Hot Chocolate and watch my favorite Christmas Movie.

#2. Take Breaks... take them often... and DON'T Burn your candle at both ends.

Exams are a marathon. One that instead of 26.2 miles lasts more along the lines of two weeks. I've learned from last year that nothing is worse than to burn yourself out after your first exam, because you won't have anything left for rounds 2-4... Take breaks in studying, go for a walk, take a hot bath, or do whatever it is that keeps you from going crazy.

#3. Alcohol... But only after the Exams are over.

Drinking during exams isn't advisable... at least for me it isn't.  I make it a point not to drink during exam weeks... however after my last exam I make it a point to have one good night of blowing off a ton of steam with a few drinks... or a few more than a few drinks...

And that my loves is how I survive exams... maybe try it without the drinks because that is really not a great habit to get into.

Love Tesla :)
